If you're responsible for approving contractors, whether that's for a single site or across a multi-site estate, chances are you've had to chase paperwork before. Insurance certificates that have expired. Health and safety policies that are three versions out of date. Method statements that don't quite match the work being carried out.
EES Electro-Mechanical has just renewed its SafeContractor accreditation, valid until 11th May 2027, and it's worth explaining exactly what that means and why it should make your job easier.
What SafeContractor Actually Checks
SafeContractor is a UKAS accredited Type C Inspection Body operating under ISO 17020:2012, and it's a founder member of SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement). Approval isn't a form we filled in once. It's an independent assessment of our health and safety documentation, benchmarked against the SafeContractor Assessment Standard and the SSIP Core Criteria that sit behind it.
That standard covers the areas that actually matter when you're inviting a contractor onto your site: how we manage risk assessments, how we control hazardous work, how we train and supervise our engineers, and how we document all of it so it can be audited.
What Our Certificate Covers
Our current certificate confirms approval under the following categories:
- Work category: General Engineer/Fitter
- Industry role: Construction Contractor
- Category related activities: Hot works, working on services, systems or equipment requiring isolation, and working with chemicals and hazardous substances
That last point matters more than it might look at first glance. A significant amount of our work, whether it's a motor swap, a pump overhaul, or fault-finding on a gearbox, means isolating live services and equipment before an engineer can safely start. SafeContractor's assessment confirms we have controlled, documented procedures for exactly that kind of work, not just a generic health and safety policy sitting in a drawer.
Why This Should Speed Up Your Process, Not Slow It Down
If your organisation runs its own supplier pre-qualification or PQQ process, you'll know how much time goes into verifying a contractor's health and safety credentials before they're cleared to quote, let alone start work.
Because SafeContractor is an SSIP founder member, our approval is recognised across the wider SSIP framework, not just by SafeContractor's own clients. In practice, that means:
- You can validate our certificate directly through the SSIP Portal rather than requesting documents from us and waiting for a response
- If your own supply chain policy accepts any SSIP member scheme, our SafeContractor status should satisfy it without a separate assessment
- You're not relying on our word. The assessment is carried out independently, against a published standard, by a UKAS accredited body
For maintenance managers and reliability engineers, that's less admin. For procurement and estates teams, particularly in regulated environments like the NHS, it's a documented answer to "how do you know this contractor is safe to use" before the question is even asked.
Keeping It Current
Accreditations lapse. Certificates expire. It's worth checking the date on any contractor's SafeContractor certificate rather than assuming it's still valid, and it's why we renew ours annually rather than letting it sit as a badge on a website.
