A gearbox is making the wrong noise, running hot or leaking, and you need to decide what to do. Refurbishing the existing unit and replacing it are both options, and the right answer depends on facts you may not have yet.
Start with the cause
A gearbox rarely fails in isolation. The motor driving it, the alignment between them and the way the unit is loaded can all contribute. If the cause is not found, a replacement gearbox can end up failing in the same way.
Questions worth asking
- What has actually failed inside the unit? You will not know until it has been dismantled and inspected.
- What caused the failure? This decides whether the same problem will come back.
- What are the options and what do they cost in full? Include the unit, the work and the downtime.
- How long will each option take? Compare time to a working gearbox, not just time to a quote.
- What guarantee applies? Ask what stands behind the work or the unit.
Why inspection comes first
A decision made before the gearbox is opened up is a guess. An inspection gives you the facts to compare refurbishment against replacement fairly.
